The most celebrated pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo is undoubtedly that of the United Kingdom. Created by Heatherwick Studio, led by the young British designer Thomas Heatherwick, the centerpiece of the pavilion is the “Seed Cathedral,” an extraordinary structure consisting of 60,000 transparent acrylic rods each containing seeds from the UK’s Millennium Seed Bank Project at Kew Gardens in London. The seeds draw attention to the pioneering role that Britain has had in researching natural solutions to human needs, while also suggesting organic archetypes for the formal language of the pavilion itself. The Seed Cathedral, along with all of Thomas Heatherwick’s works, offers an original understanding of what the organic might mean for architecture, one with great emotional power. A “magic organic” architecture.
LLLABO is privileged to have Peter Ayres, the senior architect leading the competition team for the Seed Cathedral, speak to us about the work of Heatherwick Studio, fresh from the opening of the UK Pavilion in Shanghai last week.
